Snackeroonies: Asanoya Bakery

Hello there! Back with another chapter of snackeroonies with me. This time I’m reviewing some pastries at Asanoya Bakery. And I’m sure this won’t be the last time (?)

  • Mushroom quiche set (with coffee, mushroom soup and salad topped with Japanese sesame sauce) $11.90 7.5/10
  • Turtle matcha sweet bun $3.50 9/10
  • Ham and cheese donut $2.80 7.50/10

Mushroom soup is 9/10 for mushroom soups I’ve tried in my LIFE. It’s pretty worth to get the set cuz the quiche alone is already $6.90? Quiche is 8/10— pretty good but not served very warm, together with the coffee which was a bit too lukewarm for me (Maybe the intention is to finish it up in one go once it’s served?).

The turtle matcha sweet bun was a surprising gem to have discovered today. Don’t be fooled by its cuteness (someone told me that I could only buy one cute thing today and so I’m glad I went with the cutest!). I was of course ready to be let down by some bland bun that just looked aesthetically pleasing, when in fact it was my favourite of the day. 9/10 for its rich matcha crumbing in the top and the entire bun is just really lovely and you won’t get sick of it. The ham and cheese donut is a 7.5/10 because the cream cheese is not really very even but it is in fact pretty generous in the middle. The cream cheese is just heavenly with the fried dough— it ought to be a sin. Basically a ham and cheese sandwich on a different level, so I wasn’t that amazed. The ham was a teeny bit bland.

All in all I know this won’t be my last time here. It is a very chill and conducive place to study. The posh little bakery near Bencoolen has every students’ vital necessities: free WiFi (with Facebook check-in), under-table powersockets, good food, air-con and toilets!! Their prices are a bit on the pricey end but it is comparable to many nearby study cafes too. +points to Asanoya for having a very clean interior to help me study in peace and no nosy staff to chase you out even on a public holiday. You’re bound to find a spot which suits you so you can tuck into a scrumptious tea set as you demolish your work for the day.

/YET ANOTHER FOOD TRIP/

Hey there! Just a quick update on my food trips hahah. I’m really busy with exams right now so I apologize for all the short posts ;-;

As usual, catching up with my good buddy YL equates to another great food trip. This time we did a dip around the Everton Park area, home to a good number of sweet and swanky cafes for all your needs.
First stop was The Provision Shop.
Eggs Benedict @The Provision Shop

Peach ice cream @Seriously Ice Cream, just a few block down

Shepard’s Pie @Batterworks, literally two stores next door to Seriously Ice Cream

Mini tarts @Batterworks

Highlight of the day, Korean bingsu @ Tom N Tom’s Coffee, LOVED IT. The matcha flavour is a must try. We didn’t want nuts so they gave us granola!! The mochi fits perfectly with this great dessert.

We also tried their cheese and ham bread roll@ Tom N Tom’s Coffee. This place is just perfect if you wanna hang out with a friend and stay for long hours. Really conducive and not so crowded place in the heart of the city.

K.COOK KOREAN BBQ

Hey guys! Oh yeash finally I got to go here. Full review will be updated soon (because I just had a rough night and I’m in need of some sleep). In a nutshell, 1) If you’re going for lunch be there about 11:30 (yes when the doors open)-12 if you don’t want to have to wait in line too long. Cuz about 12:30-1:30 is when the real busy lunch time crowd pours in. 2) Don’t be too fussy about sitting inside or outside. The inside doesn’t have much space for a big group of your homies and the outside is pretty airy and it’s not as hot as you think. 3) There’s a 2 hour eating time. They don’t really take note but don’t be a D. They needa control the crowd. Anyways you could probably still stuff yourself quite a bit in that 2 hours.

/23 MAY 2015/ NANTSUTTEI SINGAPORE

weeee hey guys! So today was pretty fun. Honestly, I havent gone out in a while for fun because it has just been so so hectic. Every weekend is practically full of events and things going on, on I have way too much homework stacked up. I was considering not going today to be the nerd I am but nah—and I’m glad I made that decision.

Long story short I went shopping today in Orchard and when we were looking for a place to eat we stumbled upon this lovely jewel of a ramen house.
I usually go for the staple ramen, the miso one, but I figured the Chashu Ramen ($16++) with egg (+$1.50) would be a nice change. On the other hand my friend got a fix of the Negi Chasu Ramen ($17++), which doesn’t have much difference except the fact it has shredded green onions on top. Immediately one can tell the difference in the soup. It is much greasier due to the black ma-yu (roasted garlic oil) but very rich in flavour. (Chicken-based stock) What made me really happy with it was that they give a really good serving of the delicious chashu (nice and tender but doesnt quite have the melt in your mouth feel probably because it does not have much fat) so I recommend going for the Chashu ramen instead of the normal Ramen ($12++) that only has 1 slice of chashu. Line was pretty fast so I didnt mind the wait. (UNLIKE AT TAMPOPO WHERE THE LINE DIDNT SEEM TO MOVE)

/2 JAN 2015/ ECP: walk bike eat

Hey guys! So it’s me again. Yeah busy busy start of the year but since it’s the Chinese New Year holiday why not do some updates?

Right after New Year’s Day I met up with YL and well we had fun. This is probably one of the coolest things I will remember for life: bicycle cafe hopping– a combination of two things I love to do. We started by renting bikes at ECP and made our way around the Katong area.
First stop: Chin Mee Chin Coffee & Cake Shop
Specialty: Custard puffs and sugee cakes (unfortunately didn’t get to try that)
Meluvs: I’m not a fan of custard but this was creamy and light. Not too sweet and the pastry itself was really good. I also tried the butter cream swirl– pastry was great too but cream a bit too buttery for my taste.
Notes: Try to come earlier. There are many people who come here in the mornings for coffee and their eggs and pastries so it’s really difficult to get a seat. (We just bought take-aways as there was a really long line outside just to get in.)

Butter cream swirl and custard puff

We continued to cycle around East Coast Park for a while. (Actually it was to scout area F for my BBQ)

Second stop: Bar Bar Black Sheep (Tanjong Katong outlet)
Specialty: Butter Chicken and curries
Meluvs: We couldn’t stay long but I ordered the butter chicken and garlic naan. I wanted more. If we weren’t in a rush I would stay there all day and keep eating it. The butter chicken has a really good sauce and it was just mouthwatering. Naan was nice and soft too. Great with the chicken.
Notes: There are two other outlets. Yes that’s right–one more at Bukit Timah and at Robertson Quay. They are bigger than the outlet we visited and offer a wider range of food so I’d want to check them out if possible. (You might want to do that too)

Address: 362 Tanjong Katong Road Singapore 437122
Contact: 6348 8275

Last stop: With a Pinch of Salt (Not too far away from Bar Bar Black Sheep)
Specialty: Chocolate souffle, Jumbo Chick’s Leg (large portions and affordable prices)
Meluvs: Cute and vibrant atmosphere makes for a happy eating experience. I was looking forward to having dessert here but when I heard that their chocolate souffle was not available we had to settle with the lava cake. It did suffice however I was disappointed with the cheese fries because I had expected something special for having to pay $7-8 for one serving.
Notes: Try out their mains. My friends have given good reviews about this place about how they have large portions and reasonable prices around $11-14 for food which tastes pretty good too.

30 December– I went to the Line @ Shangri-La hotel with cafe buddy (yes a huge upgrade from cafes hahaha). It was really packed so I guess we were lucky to get seats.
